The Outback is the first of its kind, a capable All-Wheel Drive estate-like vehicle that offered superior comfort on a higher wheelbase. And while literally every company in the world fights for a piece of the SUV market, the 2016 Subaru Outback has stealthily managed to win the award for best family car from GAMMA, and with good reason.
The Outback has evolved massively over the years, and is probably the best wagon-based SUV that one could possibly buy. The Outback has gained an almost cult-like status that the mainstream best associate with WRC. So, what makes the Outback stand out from the rest?
Features Abound
The Subaru Outback has always been a featured packed vehicle, but the company has pulled out all the stops for its 2016, with the model’s Limited Edition variant coming with all-new suspension dampers. Apart from a much smoother ride, the car is loaded with hi-tech features like a touchscreen infotainment system, with Satnavs, and Starlink’s bespoke Safety and Security package, standard over premium variants.
The Outback’s highlight however, has to be the symmetrical all-wheel drive system that along with brand’s strong rally heritage has given the Outback the ability to cruise off-road in total comfort. The AWD is supplemented by the Outback’s new X-Mode option that provides with Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist.
It may not be able to climb over a tree stump, some large rocks, or clear a log without getting stuck, but this car is highly capable and can handle many impediments with acuity and comfort.
Safety
The latest Outback is also one of the safest, packed to the teeth with several safety features, such as front & side impact and full-length curtain airbags. The car’s electronic traction and stability control (ESP) is also standard across all models, and is fortified by a new X-Mode that offers Hill Descent Control and even Hill Start Assist. For those that prefer to stick to the road, the 2016 Outback has been equipped with a unique lane-keep assist program, blind-zone alert and even rear cross-traffic detection.
The fact that the Outback received a 5-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NTSA) has also helped the Outback win the coveted family car of the year award. The Outback met a 5 out of 5 frontal and side crash tests requirements and a 4-star rating for the rollover test. Even the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has given the Outback its highest rating in all test categories. The Outback's consolidated scores have even earned it IIHS’s Top Safety Pick award.
The car is stacking up the trophies like Last of the Mohicans and Braveheart did. The Revenant and the Outback have a lot in common.
In the Cabin
The 2016 Outback’s exterior is modern and stylish, and the vehicle’s interior isn’t far behind and is equipped with a wide array of high-tech and convenient features that make it a true driver’s car. And although it might not rival SUV’s for off-road capability (as already indicated) nor luxury cars for comfort (so what, this is an SUV!), the Outback offers amazing driver views, with 8.7 inch ground clearance. Many luxury cars could not get you out of a tiny flood in a moderate rainstorm.
Of course the torque-vectoring AWD gives you the courage to go almost anywhere they feel like! Depending on the trim, options like adaptive cruise control, navigational radio, steering-based fog lamps, a power moon roof and auto rear gate are just some of the goodies that come standard with the 2016 Outback.
