Subaru of America had the best May in the company’s 50-year history, setting multiple company sales records that reflect the growing popularity of the Subaru brand in the United States.

The company saw a 7.2 percent increase in sales compared to May 2017, selling over 60,000 vehicles, up from just over 56,000 in the previous May. At the end of May, the company had sold 263,019 vehicles in total for the year, with the month marking Subaru 78th-straight month with month-over-month sales growth.

It was the best May ever for both the Subaru Outback and Subaru Crosstrek, with sales at 16,702 and 14,387, respectively. It was an even more significant month for the Crosstrek, as the crossover celebrated the best-selling month in its history.

Crosstrek sales increased by a massive 74.4 percent compared to May of 2017, when 8,250 vehicles were sold. The Crosstrek is currently Subaru’s third-best-selling vehicle this year behind the Outback and Forester, respectively, and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

The Outback has sold 74,907 vehicles to date this year, while the Forester has sold 65,313 vehicles so far.

Thomas Doll, the president and CEO of Subaru of America, said in a statement that the highly successful month is due to the work of Subaru retailers and that he expects sales to continue to grow in the coming months.

“For the first time ever our sales for the month of May exceeded 60,000 vehicles and it is a tribute to our retailers who continue to establish monthly sales records despite the extreme competitiveness of the market,” Doll said. “With positive press and consumer reaction to the all-new 3-row Ascent SUV, we expect even stronger demand as we enter the summer months.”

Subaru Senior Vice President of Sales Jeff Walters expects the arrival of 2019 Subaru vehicles to continue the momentum seen in the first half of the year.

“Sales of our all-new 2018 Crosstrek were up an impressive 74.4 percent in May and it enjoyed its best month ever, helping Subaru of America achieve its 78th consecutive month of sales gains,” Walters said. “2019 model year vehicles will start arriving in June and we expect that momentum to continue.”
