In 2018 Subaru released the special edition BRZ tS, tS meaning “tuned by STI.” While it wasn’t exactly an STI — we would have gone gaga for that — it was a powerful little coupe. The limited edition BRZ featured extensive performance upgrades and precision tuning that was all based on the decades of STI motorsports experience. It was the best-handling BRZ ever released. The only problem: Subaru only released 500 vehicles in the U.S.

But, interestingly, the BRZ tS could be returning for the 2020 model year. If you look on the EPA’s fuel economy listings under BRZ there is something seriously exciting. It’s the 2020 Subaru BRZ tS. It would certainly seem that the limited edition BRZ could come back next year!

According to the EPA, the 2020 BRZ tS with its six-speed manual transmission will get 20 miles per gallon in the city, 27 on the highway, and 23 combined. That’s a drop in gas mileage that could be due to power boosting modifications. CarsDirect questioned Subaru, and a spokesperson made no denials, nor confirmations. The spokesperson did comment on the fuel economy noting that larger wheels and stickier rubber lower gas mileage.

We’d love confirmation that this limited run is returning better than before, but for now all we have is speculation. Would you buy one of these BRZs? Do you think Subaru should just get on with it and make an STI edition? Let us know!
