Each October, Subaru Loves Pets is Subaru’s annual initiative to help shelter pets find homes, and this year, it’s back again for animal lovers everywhere! This year will also mark the automaker’s fifth annual National Make A Dog’s Day on October 22, a day dedicated to making dogs feel loved and taken care of, especially shelter dogs with special needs.

This month, Subaru and over 600 participating retailers will be working with local shelters, rescues, and pet organizations to help find loving homes for some of the estimated 6.3 million animals that end up in shelters yearly. The Subaru Loves Pets initiative will also put particular focus on “Underdogs”– senior animals, pets with special needs or physical challenges, and all of the otherwise unique dogs who frequently wait the longest to be adopted.

“The unconditional love of an adopted pet is something we cherish and support throughout the year, but October holds particular significance as we dedicate the entire month to uniting pets with the caring homes they rightly deserve,” said Alan Bethke, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Subaru of America, Inc. “Together with our retailers, we are committed to creating a better world for animals everywhere, and actively connecting them with our Subaru community of passionate animal advocates.”

Since 2020, Subaru and its retailers have helped over 106,000 shelter pets find loving homes with the Subaru Loves Pets adoption campaign, where participating retailers make a $100 donation to their partner shelter for every pet adopted throughout the month. The automaker has also made donations to the ASPCA for purchases of select Subaru Pet-Friendly Accessories, like pet harnesses, seat protectors, and travel bowls, through Subaru Parts Online.

This year, Subaru is launching an integrated ad campaign featuring a new pack of Underdogs for the month of October. The festivities and adoption campaigns will continue through the month, culminating in National Make a Dog’s Day on the 22nd, where followers of the event are encouraged to do something extra-special for the furry friends in their life, even adopting one if they can!

Since 2008, Subaru and its retailers have donated over $51 million to national and local organizations in support of rescuing, transporting, and adopting of over 420,000 animals. This year, you can support the initiative and help even more animals find safe and loving homes by posting photos of your celebrations for National Make a Dog’s Day online, and considering taking part in your local Subaru adoption campaign!
