2016 Subaru WRX can deliver quite an addictive flood of power for a mid-range car. It's more refined when compared with many others in the same class and is a joy to get behind the wheel of.

Introduction

The list is published by Wards Auto and in order to make this list, an engine needs to be new or re-engineered significantly as well as sold in the US market. The 31 nominees for this year included 10 winners from last year and 21 fresh entries. Engines are scored depending on their horsepower, drivability, torque, harshness mitigation, noise, flexibility, onboard technology and fuel economy.

Engine

The WRX engine makes use of a combination of high compression, direct fuel injection, intercooler, twin scroll turbocharger and D-AVCS for its outstanding performance and efficiency. It can produce as much as 268 hp at 5600 rpm with a 15.9 psi turbo boost. Torque peaks at 258 lb-ft. It can rev till 6,700 RPM which is quite exhilarating and fulfilling.

Features

It comes with either a 6 speed manual or Sport Lineartronic auto transmission. Some of the new features include blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert system, lane change assist, EyeSight, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and pre-collision braking. The STARLINK touch screen system comes standard on WRX models now and even has smartphone app integration built in. There are new 18 inch alloy wheels as well as various enhancements to the front suspension.

It is a pretty small car though. Do not expect to get too many Christmas presents in there or even a small chair you are moving to a friend’s home. It does appear to be a car you would see in Fast and Furious 1, 2, and 3.

Safety

The 2016 WRX has been awarded by the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) for its EyeSight technology. It won the 2016 Top Safety Pick+ and the 2016 Top Safety Pick categories for its small front overlap, moderate front overlap, roof crush, side impact, rear impact, and crash avoidance.

Sales

As of Nov. 2015, 513,693 vehicles have been sold by Subaru which include 30,645 WRX's. They are well on their way to setting a sales record once again. This will be the 8th year of sales growth for the company and will also be the 7th successive sales record they have set.
