Origins

It is based on the 5 door Impreza hatchback but comes with a higher ground clearance, a beefed up suspension, fender flares, front as well as rear fascia’s and a roof rack for a totally different look. Even though the body is pretty much the same, the vehicle is surprisingly distinct.

Engine, transmission, and mileage

The Crosstrek comes with a manual transmission or a CVT transmission which has standard setup as always. There is even a Hybrid model which provides as much perkiness but increased the fuel efficiency to 31 mpg.  The Crosstrek has 148 hp, a 2.0 L, 4 cylinder engine, and a 5 speed manual gearbox or their Lineartronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission).

The acceleration is just as great in both of them. The hybrid powertrain in the vehicle can help propel the engine from a dead stop using electricity alone but only when you are accelerating gently and there is nothing behind you.

The Specs

The rest of the specs on the Crosstrek reinforce its credentials as a utility vehicle. The ground clearance has been increased and it now stands at 8.7 inches. The approach as well as the departure angles is pretty good for the vehicle. It has a huge gas tank, engine cooling, great suspension, & structural reinforcements. It might just be one of the best small vehicles for any dirt, gravel, or snow filled roads. You cannot stop Mother Nature but you can prepare for her.

If you live in an area where it snows – this is an ideal vehicle. But even if you do not, not all roads are paved and this vehicle can deliver you, your family, and your belongings in tough conditions in comfort even if you do not go off-road.

The steering is a little numb on the highway and is susceptible to crosswinds. Very little road noise and precise handling ensures this vehicle drives just like a passenger car while offering versatile cargo capacity for camping supplies, ski gear, or just regular day to day cargo. The Hybrid version stows the battery pack under the deck which means cargo volume is hardly changed.

The Looks

The cabin of the vehicle is pretty much the same as the Impreza with just a few changes done with the fabrics. Adults will be able to enter and exit through all the doors and 4 people can fit comfortably inside. The roof rack will be able to carry as much as 150 pounds. Subaru Crosstrek will be able to tow as much as 1,500 pounds. The trims and materials are average when you consider the price although they do fit the utilitarian image of the brand.

It has some nice wheels too!

Military ready?

XCAR had recently tested the Crosstrek far away from the puddles and shopping carts of a parking lot into terrain which will make you think it was the reason all-wheel drive was invented. So could it hold up when faced with muddy hills, small lakes, steep climbs, and similar terrain which the military trains on? It's just a one word answer and that word is, yes. So if you're crazy about the outdoors, don't let this car fool you, it is meant for the outdoors.

You will be able to enjoy satellite radio and heated seats while trudging through some of the harshest conditions vehicles have ever faced and still come out on top.
