
Subaru's engineers have re-engineered the WRX from 2015 and there are some changes which are already in the works for making it better. As if they have not done enough already! How much more can this company do? They already make some of the best cars in the world and have a factory in Indiana that is completely renewable!
In 2015, the WRX received a new, more powerful 2.0 liter turbocharged boxer engine. The power plant generated more torque and power with much less displacement as compared to the 2014 WRX's 2.5 liter turbo. It also had an improved fuel economy too boot! But what exactly prompted this change from the 2.5 L to the smaller 2.0 L?
The automaker says that this was because they were looking at a sporty unit which can be paired with their Lineartronic CVT transmission while still delivering the trademark WRX driving experience. It appears as if they have succeeded in a major way with this 2.0L engine.
It performs just how it was advertised and also has the new six speed manual transmission. It offers 200 mm of ground clearance. There are not too many flaws with this vehicle. If any! Yes, if you want a truck this is not it but this car can work for so many people. It does not matter if you are a stay at home mom or an executive at a company, it does matter, this car is sensible for all types of professions. On the other hand though, the interior of the Subaru Outback is nothing to write home about but it does not matter. This car is the epitome of being practical.
The New Power Plant
The displacement of this engine was downsized from the previous versions and the fuel injection system was changed as well to support direct injection. These changes helped them increase the torque and improved fuel economy of the engine. The team worked very hard on improving other areas too including the tires and aerodynamics which helped with the overall performance of the car.
The engine is based on the 200 hp 2.0L 4 cylinder engine of the BRZ and the 250 hp 2.0L engine of the Forester XT. But the WRX engine does have hotter camshafts, higher rate valve springs, and several other enhancements which can boost its output when compared to the Forester XT.
Square Architecture
This engine is different from any of the previous H4 engines from Subaru. This new FA series employs a square architecture which has been designed using a bore and stroke dimension which is exactly the same at 86 mm. The engine and all of the components inside it have been designed so that they are as light as they can possibly be.
The main goal here was to build an engine that had the best balance between efficiency and performance. It is what the people at Subaru call environmental performance or dynamic performance. They want the performance of the engine to attain the highest possible level in both the scenarios. It is not all about looks, it is about capability!
More Changes
Subaru have already started working on improvements for the 2.0 L turbo 2016 WRX engine in order to take it to the next level of performance and efficiency. They feel that there is more than enough room for improvement in the next generation of the engine.
They are going to be focusing on three things in particular here. They will try and improve the engine's combustion process, air induction, and fuel injection. This will result in more power and greater efficiency as compared to the current WRX. When exactly is the WRX going to get this new 2.0 L engine? That's a question we don't have an answer to yet.
