What is EyeSight?
EyeSight is a newly developed technology which has proven to reduce the number of automotive crashes with the help of two cameras and “live” images. A recent Japanese traffic survey stated that there has been a 61 percent reduction in the number of road accidents thanks to EyeSight. Though this does not mean you should drive drunk or practice aggressive driving and act like this is no big deal. This technology is awesome but it cannot make up for that type of terrible decision making.
The survey also revealed that between the years 2010 and 2014, automobiles equipped with EyeSight have had 84 percent less accidents than the ones without EyeSight. And that’s not all, this brilliant new technology, courtesy from Subaru, is the reason why vehicle-to-vehicle crashes have gone down by 62 percent and vehicle-to-pedestrian collisions have gone down by 49 percent in the past few years.
How does it work?
The EyeSight technology uses two stereo cameras which are attached on both sides of the top of the car’s windscreen to capture images of the road ahead, acting as a "second pair of eyes" for the driver. It monitors its surroundings watching for obstacles up ahead, including cyclists, pedestrians, and other vehicles. If the system senses a potentially dangerous situation ahead, it immediately alerts the driver. And if the driver fails to respond, the car automatically stops itself.
The entire system includes six different technologies that are the Pre-collision Throttle Management, Pre-collision Breaking, Pre-collision Steering Assist, Lead Vehicle Start, Lane Departure and Sway Warning and, Adaptive Cruise Control.
The assurance of safety
The Subaru Legacy and Outback are both equipped with EyeSight and very recently, because of Eyesight’s outstanding results, the Subaru Outback scored a maximum 5-star EuroNCAP safety rating, along with an impressive 'Top Safety Pick' (top crash avoidance) rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The Japan NCAP conducted tests and the system earned a top 'Advanced Safety Vehicle-Plus' rating from them. So, when it comes to your safety and the safety of your family, EyeSight is of marvelous benefit. The Subaru vehicles equipped with EyeSight currently hold the highest ratings in the safety tests conducted by Europe, Australia, and the US as well. Subaru just continues to set the bar higher.
Growing popularity
In 2015, according to the J.D. Power 2015 US Tech Choice Study, the preferences of three out of five consumers concerning their vehicles were related to collision protection. The consumers are gradually becoming aware of the perils of the road and the methods they can apply in order to avoid them. They are intent on educating themselves about how these accidents can be avoided. And considering how EyeSight is one of the most prolific preventative safety systems available, the awareness about EyeSight is rapidly spreading on top of its popularity.
Now, before purchasing a car or any other vehicle, consumers research and choose to buy the ones that have similar systems built-in based on the aforementioned study. As of 2016, EyeSight is available on the new 2016 Subaru Forester, Impreza, Outback, WRX, Crosstrek, and Legacy. With Eyesight’s success, we can now expect other manufacturers to bring this kind of technology to the market and make the roads a much safer place for all. Don’t drink and drive though!
