The engineers at Subaru have re-engineered the WRX for 2015 and changes are already in the process in order to make the car better.

In 2015, the WRX got a new and even more powerful 2.0 L turbocharged signature boxer engine. This power plant beast could generate more torque and power from lesser displacement as compared to the 2.5 L turbo engine. It also offers improved fuel economy to the driver saving them some money in the process. But what prompted this change to the small 2.0 L turbo in the first place is the question that is intriguing.

The management’s views

Masuo Takatsu, the Project GM for the WRX and WRX STI at Subaru, said that this new engine's development will be focused on new sporty power units which can be paired with the Lineartronic CVT transmission and deliver the kind of driving experience that the WRX is known for. It appears that they would have succeeded with the 2.0 L turbo boxer engine if it can perform like they say. It is also pairs with the new six speed manual gearbox.

This car is engineered to an exceptional level and the speed and quickness of this car is notable. This car will get you to where you need to be with precision and when the police are not around, you can zoom around safely and smoothly. If you want to drive slower, no problem at all since even when this car is driving slower it is smooth, comfortable, and fuel efficient.

The technicalities

Engineers at Subaru have also managed to downsize the engine's displacement and altered the fuel injection system to a direct one. These changes helped them get greater torque and fuel economy at the same time. They have worked hard on improving other areas too including the tires and aerodynamics which helped contribute to the achievement.

The signature boxer engine has been built around the 2.0 XT turbocharged engine from the Forester and is also depending on the BRZ's 2.0 L FA boxer 4-cylinder. The newly modified engine now comes with hotter and better camshafts and higher rate valve springs among other small improvements to help boost output.

The square architecture

This engine is very different from any of Subaru's previous H-4s and the new FA series of engines uses square architecture designed with the bore and stroke dimensions at 86 mm each. The new engine and all of its components have been designed to be extremely light and durable.

The goal here was to design an engine with an optimal balance between efficiency and performance. This is what Subaru's engineers call dynamic and environmental performance. They want their engines to reach the highest levels possible. The same philosophy also shows in the overall company model. Their cars are designed to be the best in their class. Whether they are rally cars or crossovers or SUVs, they are always gearing to deliver the best possible value for the price put on the unit which is one reason Subaru has been climbing higher even despite the recession.

More change coming

Subaru is working on improving their 2.0 L turbocharged WRX engine and taking it to the next level of performance and efficiency. Takatsu says that there is ample space for improvement in the next generation of this engine.

He mentions three things in particular that they are going to be focusing on - improving fuel injection, air induction, and the combustion process. It will create more power and greater efficiency than any previous WRX engine. When is Subaru going to get this new 2.0 L turbo engine? No one knows yet. This is why it is suggested that you wait for the next gen Subaru WRXSTI instead of settling in for the current gen.

But if you need another car now and do not want to wait, what Subaru has on the shelf now is awesome and industry leading. There is not a car in their fleet that is not well engineered. Their cars are well built, fuel efficient, and fine-tuned.
