It is a little strange to be discussing Subaru's new rear drive Levorg racer. After all, they are known for their AWD Impreza WRX STI rally cars. It is what their brand is all about and where they have created their niche. They are only going to sell this new sports wagon in Europe, Japan, and Australia. Americans are not going to get the Levorg. That is not good! What is up with that? Oh well, Subaru has other fantastic offerings for Americans which has been discussed in other articles.
The RWD BRZ has participated in the Japan's Super GT series successfully. But it is the Levorg sports tourer which is going to be advancing their name further beyond the Global Rallycross circuit. Subaru are ready to start this new series which is going to be very different from what they've done in the past. This new race car will be developed by MSA BTCC (British Touring Car Championship).
AWD Conversion for New Cars
Subaru has entered into a three year agreement with BMR who will be carrying the Subaru logo and will run the Levorg in the series. The regulations only allow RWD cars so the wagon will get a new chassis built right from the ground up. There's a lot of excitement and anticipation as the Japanese carmaker enters the high level circuit racing series for the first time.
Have you seen the movie Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift? This car could be used for that even though it has four doors. Many of those drivers would prefer two door cars for that type of racing which takes place in a parking structure but the Levorg could handle that type of racing. It could also master the nature of the drift as well! Though it would need a fantastic driver with plenty of practice under their belt as proven by Sean Boswell (Lucas Black) in the movie.
Any driver would need plenty of financial support as Boswell had with Han. In reality, Subaru has deep pockets too based on how many fabulous cars they sell and how many places they sell them.
Subaru's Boxer Engine
The engine is among the main reasons for the success of the Impreza WRX STI. The boxer engine certainly is one of the keys here. It sits low on the chassis and has a lower center of gravity. It is also going to be one of the main reasons why the Levorg will shake things up in the BTCC. One of the new BMR drivers, Jason Plato, says that he is excited about the project more than any other project that he has been a part of in his career. He didn't deny that there were going to be challenges, but he didn't seem to mind them at all.
New Driver
The BMR team is also going to get a new driver now. This team will include 4 drivers instead of 3 with James Cole, the ex-British Formula Ford Champion joining the current drivers of Jason Plato, Colin Turkington, and Warren Scott. James is going to be driving the 4th new Levorg sports tourer which is his fourth season as part of the BTCC.
The BMR team is currently getting the new RWD Subaru Levorg which is ready to go. They are going to be revealed at the season launch for the BTCC which will be held on March 22nd at Donington Park. There is a new chapter which is about to be written for Subaru motorsports and it isn't going to have anything to do with the WRX STI. It might be different but will be an exciting chapter for sure. So stay tuned.
