Even in the first six months, 2018 has been a strong year for Subaru. Excellent sales have pushed the company into the new year. However, Subaru has more to celebrate. In addition to sales, the company has celebrated a very important anniversary; 30 years of the STI.

Subaru Tecnica International, commonly shortened as STI, was founded on April 2, 1988 as the motorsports subsidiary of Subaru Corporation. STI started small, and has since grown to encompass vehicles that have brought home championships and world records.

When someone talks about a Subaru STI, likely the first vehicle to come to mind is the Subaru WRX. The WRX STI is a common sight on both the road and in rally races across the globe. Its ability to negotiate any terrain while still being a functional daily driver has led it to its popularity.

However, the WRX STI was far from the first vehicle to be produced by STI. STI founder and president Ryuichiro Kuze helped lead the company into producing its first vehicle in 1989, the Subaru Legacy RS RA.

From this small beginning rose a line of vehicles that claimed championships. STI has allowed Subaru to accumulate 47 WRC wins, several wins at Nürburgring, and earning the new sedan lap record at Nürburgring in 2017.

In the grand scheme, STI is still very young. However, it has helped Subaru to establish itself as a leader in performance and off-road vehicles.
