2018 has been a big year for Subaru, with the company unveiling new vehicles to align with the evolving demands of automotive customers. With hybrid vehicles become more popular as drivers seek environmentally-friendly models with increased fuel efficiency, Subaru announced its first plug-in hybrid vehicle in mid-May: the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid.

With the release of the hybrid model, Subaru has piggybacked on the success of the traditional Crosstrek, which is currently its third best-selling vehicle.

The Crosstrek Hybrid has all the capabilities of the traditional Crosstrek, but with improved fuel efficiency, according to a statement. The hybrid model can be driven using both gas and electric power, like a normal hybrid, and can also be driven on pure electric when traveling in local areas.

Subaru says the vehicle combines the off-road abilities of the traditional Crosstrek model, with an improved fuel efficiency that only hybrid vehicles can boast.

“The Crosstrek Hybrid is an advanced, eco-friendly version of the versatile compact SUV that has become the brand’s third best-selling model in America, the company said in a statement. “The Crosstrek Hybrid combines the wide-ranging off-road capability of the gas-powered Crosstrek with hybrid efficiency.”

The Crosstrek Hybrid will be built around the same Subaru Global Platform that the gas-powered Crosstrek was built on, which can handle both hybrid and electric powertrains.

The announcement of this new hybrid vehicle comes as Subaru also announced the design of its first three-row crossover SUV, the 2019 Subaru Ascent, in early 2018.
