With the first official day of fall fast approaching, it’s time to start thinking about the fun things you’re going to do with your family this autumn. One of the best ways to enjoy the season, especially in beautiful central Jersey, is to hop in the car and take a road trip. Whether you have a destination in mind or you just want to enjoy the scenery, the experience is always worth the drive. Here are some great fall road trips to think about taking this year!

Delaware River Scenic Byway

This is one of the most beautiful and historic roads in the state of New Jersey. It stretches from Hamilton Township to Frenchtown. The Federally Protected Wild and Scenic section of the Delaware River runs parallel to a portion of the road, making it beautiful just as a driving route, but there are also plenty of interesting stops along the way.

Washington Crossing State Park

This is one of the several fantastic stops along the Delaware River Scenic Byway. It’s also a fascinating piece of American history, because this park marks the spot where George Washington crossed the Delaware River on Christmas night, 1776, and proceeded with his troops to Trenton, where they battled a garrison of Hessian mercenaries and won an important and well-remembered victory of the Revolutionary War. The park is now a perfect place for a fall picnic, a hike, a camping or fishing trip, or simply a little walk through history.

Historic Village at Allaire

The Historic Village at Allaire is a living history museum based around the village’s heyday as an iron factory town in the early 19th century. It's a great place to learn about the Industrial Age in America, and a great fall trip for history lovers of all ages.

Princeton Ghost Tours

Princeton, New Jersey is a great place to visit any time of the year, but if you’re of the opinion that fall isn’t really fall without something spooky to do, then you’ll want to check out this ghost tour of Princeton. The tour includes entry to a local cemetery which is otherwise closed to the public, and there is even ghost hunting equipment provided for both believers and skeptics to see if they can pick up any traces of activity beyond the veil.

Grounds for Sculpture

Why choose between going to the museum or a day at the park when you could have both? The Grounds for Sculpture are a great way to appreciate the fall atmosphere while also enjoying the nearly 300 contemporary sculptures on display. Tickets are required, so make sure to plan ahead for this one!
