Subaru’s advanced safety technologies keep making the automaker a world-class brand across all kinds of driving conditions. Recently, Subaru of America revealed that the company’s 2023 Outback SUV, 2023 Legacy sedan, and the athletic 2022 WRX all earned a 2022 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). In fact, that means Subaru earned an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK award for each model the company currently offers.

To receive a 2022 TOP SAFETY PICK or TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, vehicles are required to earn ‘Good’ ratings in each of IIHS’s six crashworthiness tests; ‘Good’ or ‘Acceptable’ headlight scores, and available front crash prevention that manages to get an “Advanced” or “Superior” rating for both vehicle-to-vehicle and daytime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations. The ‘Plus’ is designated for models that exclusively have good ‘Good’ or ‘Acceptable’ headlight ratings.

“We are absolutely thrilled that every model currently available in our lineup received a 2022 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK award,” said Thomas J. Doll, President and Chief Executive Officer, Subaru of America, Inc. “This is a testament to our commitment to our customers that we will provide them with vehicles set to the highest safety standards year over year.

Subaru’s WRX had previously earned a Top Safety Pick for 2021 position, but for 2022 it received the “plus” with enhanced lighting. Lower trims received worse ratings for their halogen lights. For the 2022 edition, the higher trims arrive with LED projector headlights and lower trims are fitted with LED projectors. The WRX’s lighting rating for these lower trims was upgraded from poor to “acceptable.”

The Subaru Outback has won an IIHS Top Safety Pick award for an unbroken 14 years, and it’s received a top-tier “Plus” award since 2013. The Legacy sedan, a mechanically-related sibling to the Outback, has also had a tenured Top Safety Pick history of 17 years with Plus earned since 2013.  Both vehicles were given good ratings in the IIHS’ six crash tests and have a front crash prevention system with superior scores.
