Finding ways to give back and support the community is just a part of how Subaru does business, and one of the company’s most recent charitable efforts will be helping to support their hometown in Camden, New Jersey. Subaru is partnering with FOODWORKS to donate to and support Camden small businesses this year.

FOODWORKS, a subset of Compass Group USA, partners with small, unique local restaurants, including beloved neighborhood staples and women-owned and minority-owned businesses, and provides them with operating space, such as locations in office buildings, retail developments, universities and other dining venues. The restaurants that FOODWORKS partners with share a commitment to quality, sustainability and community involvement, much like FOODWORKS, its parent companies, and Subaru itself.

FOODWORKS created the IGNITE program in April of 2022 in response to reduced funding for restaurants from the federal government, hoping to make a difference by supporting their partners across the country. IGNITE is a community grant program with over $100,000 available in immediate grants, helping partners to add new equipment, expand operations or achieve certifications.

Camden, NJ, has been the location of Subaru’s American headquarters since 2018, and when they moved in, they made a promise to show their dedication to the community by supporting neighbors and small businesses. This new partnership is helping to do that, with Subaru inviting the FOODWORKS team to speak with local business owners and awarding IGNITE grants based on their needs.

“Subaru and our partners are proud to dedicate this donation to the local businesses of Camden, New Jersey who have shown us hospitality and companionship since Subaru moved in five years ago,” said Shira Haaz, Corporate Responsibility Manager at Subaru of America, Inc. “We want to thank Eurest and the Compass Group USA for the opportunity to give back to those that are important to us.”

The first Camden small business to receive an IGNITE grant is Blowin’ Smoque, a food-truck-turned brick-and-mortar barbecue restaurant. Blowin’ Smoque was introduced to Subaru when they provided catering at the company’s downtown headquarters, and the restaurant has since grown into a local staple. The Blowin’ Smoque team received  $2,500, plus additional assistance in acquiring increased insurance and other operational support, which will help the business grow over time. The IGNITE grant has led Blowin’ Smoque to be able to offer their menu at the café at Subaru’s Camden headquarters!

Subaru’s partnership with FOODWORKS will be an ongoing project, and more local businesses will receive grants and mentorship in the future. It’s all part of Subaru showing their love for the communities they serve.
