Being named a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) is one of the great honors that a vehicle can earn. The Top Safety Pick list is incredibly competitive each year, and only the best of the best make it on. For an automaker like Subaru that’s so dedicated to creating safe and reliable vehicles, IIHS recognition is always the goal, and two of these coveted awards for 2023 have been earned by Subaru vehicles, the 2024 Impreza and the 2024 Crosstrek. The Crosstrek was named a 2023 Top Safety Pick, and the Impreza was named a 2023 Top Safety Pick+, an even more prestigious honor.
To qualify for an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award in the year 2023 is no small feat. A vehicle must earn a “Good” rating in an updated side impact test with higher standards, and must achieve the same rating in the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front and original moderate overlap front tests. The vehicle’s standard headlights must be rated “Good” or “Acceptable” across all of its trims, and there must be an available front crash prevention system that earns “Advanced” or “Superior” ratings in both daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations.
While this is a moment of celebration for Subaru, it’s far from the automaker’s first time on the list. Four Subaru vehicles were chosen as Top Safety Pick+ winners this year: the 2024 Ascent, the 2024 Impreza, the 2024 Outback, and the 2024 Solterra. Of those four, three are repeat customers– the Ascent has been a Top Safety Pick for six consecutive years, the Outback for fifteen consecutive years, and the Impreza has been named a Top Safety Pick+ four separate times. Three vehicles, the 2024 Crosstrek, the 2024 Legacy, and the 2024 Forester, were named Top Safety Picks this year, and it’s not the first win for any of them. The Crosstrek has won six Top Safety Pick+ awards, and the Legacy and the Forester have been Top Safety Picks for eighteen and seventeen consecutive years respectively.
“We are thrilled that seven of our 2024 models received a 2023 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK award, especially under the new criteria,” said Jeff Walters, President and Chief Operating Officer, Subaru of America, Inc. “This is a testament to our commitment of providing customers with vehicles set to the highest safety standards.”
Since 2013, Subaru has earned a grand total of 70 Top Safety Pick+ awards, more than any other brand. In future years, that number is sure to grow even more!
