Their grand entrance into the motor vehicle market was announced with the Subaru 1500, which used a 1.5-litre four-cylinder OHV engine that set the bar high for all competitors. America was making massive cars that took up half the street and consumed lots of fuel. This came to bite them in the behind in the 70s when oil prices rose in cost and the Japanese were making cars that did not require that much fuel per mile.

Though four-wheel drive vehicles are the reason for Subaru’s fame, there are some very sweet rides that went out of production but are still the best choices among used cars.

1. Impreza P1

Impreza P1 is the sixth limited edition car from Subaru, introduced in March 2000, five years after Colin McRae drove Subaru to clinch Britain’s first ever World Championship in 1995. The P1 (Prodrive One) was built solely for the UK and exactly 1,000 cars were manufactured and sold.

It uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged flat 4 boxer engine that produces a maximum power of 280 bhp @ 280 rpm. Its top speed is a recorded 155 mph and goes from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. The front and rear spoiler aid aerodynamics so much so that it uses much less power than a standard turbo, even at a speed of 100 mph. No wonder, it still had plenty of takers.

2. Impreza 2.0 WRX

Subaru cars were not available in the US until 2002 since the cost of certifying cars was considered expensive. The Impreza 2.0 WRX was the first Subaru to be sold in the US; this change of heart occurred when Subaru realized that the demand for these cars was high enough to cover the certifying costs.

It uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged flat 4 boxer engine that can pump out a maximum power of 227 bhp, has a top speed of 145 mph, and goes from 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds. It is smooth, efficient, and glides on the road. Even at a mileage above 50,000, the car functions just as new without the slightest decrease in power or top speed.

3. Forester XT Turbo

The Subaru Forester XT Turbo stepped into the world in 2003 and immediately stunned SUV cars. This five-door car has a spacious and slick interior but it isn’t exactly a stunner from outside. It uses a 2.5-litre turbocharged flat 4 boxer engine that displays a maximum power of 224 bhp, top speed of 140 mph, and goes from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. This car is perfect for large families and has all the best functionalities of a Subaru car.

4. Legacy 3.0 R Spec B

The Legacy is a lightweight, visually stunning car with spacious interiors and robust seats that can accommodate an active and decent size family. It was introduced in 2004 and uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged flat 6 boxer engine. It exhibits a maximum power of 241 bhp @ 6,600rpm, a top speed of 151 mph and goes from 0 to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds.

The V6 engines gives out a rumble or two on full throttle but maintains decent performance throughout. Keep an eye out for engine issues and their repair bills could build up to not appeal to your checking account.

5. Impreza 2.5 WRX STI

The Impreza 2.5, manufactured in 2007, is the car that delivers when called upon to do so, much like its predecessors in Impreza. It has tremendous grip on the terrain, in wet and dry conditions alike. It uses a 2.5-litre turbocharged flat 4 boxer engine, has a maximum power of 296 bhp, top speed of 155mph, and goes from 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds. Its trunk has a luxurious amount of space and the seats are complete with leather and Alcantara, which adds a sporty touch to the car.
