Just one look at the 1988 Subaru XT6 4WD coupe we're talking about here and you will know that the people at Subaru obviously didn't take Nancy's advice. The particular model was launched in the year 1985.
Rumors
Rumor has it that the basic shape of the XT had been sketched on a cocktail napkin and had a 0.29 drag coefficient thanks to the pop up headlights and flush everything.
Interiors
The interior of the car was even wilder with its tiny switches and buttons. It had pods on both sides of the wheel for managing the main systems. They moved with the tilt wheel to ensure optimal access at all times. And let's not forget the gear shift which is shaped like a beer tap.
Engine
This is the first year Subaru released a flat 6 cylinder engine. The XT6 had a 2.7 liter engine with an amazing 145 bhp. It also came with Cybrid electro hydraulic power steering and a much better suspension as compared to their other cars. The XT6 performed outstanding on the roads and it is not just because of its superb engine or excellent handling, but also the fact that the Fuji Heavy Industries managed to pull off the engineering marvel of keeping it under the 2,200 pound weight curb, and this was at par with its competitors.
The new "old car"
The first thing to notice about this car is that it isn't lying out in some field surrounded by manure and trashcans. Even though these cars are quite rare today, finding one which is still being maintained is even rarer.
The seller says the car is an 8.5 on the inside and a 7.5 on the outside. On the inside, one trim is cracked a little and the headliner is sagging a bit. On the outside, there is a slight issue with the paint near the rear bumper and one headlight doesn't go up all the way.
Mechanically, things are good and bad equally. The 5 speed, 4WD engine works just fine but the clutch is stiff. The seller says it may be due to the pressure plate but he doesn't know for sure. We think it has something to do with the throw out bearing though. If so, it will require separating the engine and gearbox and then installing a brand new clutch. There is a mystery noise under the car too. Wonder what it could be?
Apart from this, the car seems to be in excellent shape with 181,000 miles already under its belt and a clean title on the table. Let's not forget, the asking price for this car is just $3,500.
What do you think? Is $3,500 too much for the 4WD, 5 speed, 6 cylinder coupe or is it a killer deal? Time will soon tell.
